Music Competition
SCO is the main organiser of 2 major Chinese music competitions in Singapore— the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC) and the Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC). These Chinese music competitions foster a brighter local Chinese music scene.
Singapore Chinese Orchestra International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Compositions
The SICCOC is targeted at talented composers looking for opportunities to share their compositions. SCO hopes to provide local Chinese Orchestra talents the platforms to showcase themselves and engender a greater interest in Chinese music within the community. Since the launch in 2006, the SICCOC has been striving to encourage musical creativity, pique international interest and establish repertoire. As an unprecedented local composition competition, it has attracted countless composers in Singapore and abroad, and every season was a success. The SICCOC has witnessed the creation of impressive Chinese orchestral compositions that are rich in Southeast Asian musical flavour. Local and regional composers have written award-winning works that have since become significant music pieces played widely by orchestras in the region, and also serve as unique representations of Singapore’s Chinese music. The SICCOC has promoted the progression of a more diverse and vibrant Chinese music community, while paving the way for future composers to augment Southeast Asian works and solidify our musical identities.
Singapore Chinese Music Competition
The Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC), previously known as the National Chinese Music Competition, is a biennial competition first organised by the National Arts Council in 1998. The SCMC provides an excellent platform for young musicians and local music groups to showcase their limitless potential in Chinese musical instruments, while developing their skills and musicality. With various categories for individuals and Chinese music ensembles in Singapore, the SCMC hopes to become an inclusive platform which provides valuable performance opportunities for musicians of varying ages and musical capabilities. The SCMC promotes higher musical standards and discovers new talents. More importantly, the SCMC aims to unite the Chinese orchestral music community by supporting participant’s lifelong interest in pursuing Chinese music. Appraised by a panel of local and international Chinese music veterans, many winners of this distinguished competition have advanced towards becoming Chinese music professionals, with some even gaining international repute. Young musicians sharing similar aspirations can check out the SCMC website for more information.
